Cooling System Repair and Service

Cooling System

Signs Your Engine’s Cooling System Needs Service or Repairs

At the moment you start up your car, your engine temperature begins a rapid rise. As long as your cooling system is healthy, you'll have the mechanisms in place to regulate the heat. But if any part of your cooling system is malfunctioning, then your vehicle could be susceptible to overheating, which could cause significant engine problems. Here's a look at six signs of cooling system trouble.

Over Heating with “smoke” coming from under the hood of your vehicle

If smoke (it is really water and coolant vapour) starts emerging from under your hood, then you likely have sprung a coolant leak in either the radiator, the radiator hoses that run from the radiator to the engine or the engine itself.

High Reading on Temp Gauge or Temperature Light on Dash Comes On

If your temperature guage suddenly skyrockets, or incrementally creeps up into the red zone, then you'll want to cease driving and give us a call to figure out if your vehicle is safe to drive.  Then we need to diagnose the cause of the high temperature reading.

Decreasing Gas Mileage

It's within a certain range of temperature that vehicles attain maximum fuel-efficiency. If the engine temperature exceeds this range, then you could see a drop in gas mileage.

No or little heat inside the vehicle

The internal heat in your vehicle comes from your engine coolant as it is circulated through your radiator, engine and then the heater core inside your vehicle.  No or little internal heat could indicate a problem with the coolant circulation in your vehicle.

Low Coolant

In the event that your coolant level suddenly and mysteriously drops, then you'll want to have Import Auto perform an inspection so the underlying issue is identified.

White Exhaust Smoke

White exhaust smoke suggests that coolant is being burned up within your combustion chamber. Whenever exhaust smoke appears to be off in color, it's best to further investigate the matter.

External Coolant Leak

From time to time, it's a good idea to scan over the ground where your vehicle is regularly parked and check for evidence of automotive fluid leaks. Coolant is often identifiable by its bright green color, though it might be another color like pink or yellow.
